Every state runs its own Public Service Commission for civil services, secretariat and subordinate posts, plus state-specific boards for clerks, sub-inspectors and forest or agriculture officers.
Banking is one of the largest graduate recruiters, through a shared national process (IBPS) as well as bank and regulator-specific exams with faster hiring cycles than most central services.
The Staff Selection Commission is the single largest recruiter for graduate-level Group B/C posts across central ministries, running CGL for degree holders across every stream.
Indian Railways is one of the country’s largest employers, and RRB NTPC is its flagship graduate-level exam covering commercial, clerical and traffic roles across every zone.
UPSC conducts India’s most competitive graduate-level exam for the IAS, IPS, IFS and allied central services, along with the Combined Defence Services and Engineering Services exams.
Engineering graduates join Maharatna, Navratna and Miniratna companies as Executive/Management Trainees, mostly shortlisted through their GATE score rather than a separate written exam.
Graduates join the Army, Navy or Air Force as commissioned officers through UPSC’s Combined Defence Services exam, or through Short Service Commission and Territorial Army entries.
A B.Ed-qualified graduate can teach in central and most state schools after clearing CTET or the relevant state TET, which is a qualifying gateway rather than a job by itself.
Roles like Deputy Collector, DSP, Block Development Officer and Assistant Section Officer combine public authority with a fixed promotion ladder, filled mainly via UPSC, State PSC and SSC CGL.
Engineering and science graduates have a dedicated pathway through PSU-GATE recruitment, RRB/SSC junior engineer posts, and technical or scientific posts in DRDO, ISRO and defence organisations.
A graduate in any discipline arts, commerce or science remains eligible for the largest pool of government vacancies, from SSC CGL and banking to UPSC and State PSC posts.
Most guides list exams by name; this table starts from your degree instead. Filter by stream to see where a BA, B.Com, B.Sc, B.Tech, BCA/BBA or LLB graduate has the strongest fit.
| Degree | Best-fit exams | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| BA (Arts / Humanities) | SSC CGL, UPSC CSE & State PSC, RRB NTPC, banking exams | A strong pick for UPSC/State PSC, since the General Studies-heavy syllabus rewards a humanities background. |
| B.Com (Commerce) | Banking (IBPS/SBI/RBI), SSC CGL (Assistant Audit Officer, Tax Assistant), Railways accounts posts | Commerce graduates get a direct edge in RRB Junior Accounts Assistant and SSC’s audit/statistical posts. |
| B.Sc (Science) | SSC CGL (Junior Statistical Officer), Forest Service exams, RRB NTPC, teaching (with B.Ed) | A Statistics or Maths-heavy B.Sc opens SSC’s JSO and Statistical Investigator posts specifically. |
| B.Tech / B.E. (Engineering) | PSU Executive Trainee via GATE, RRB JE, SSC JE, DRDO/ISRO, Defence technical entries | GATE is the single highest-leverage exam for an engineering graduate aiming at a PSU. |
| BCA / BBA (Computer Applications & Management) | SSC CGL, banking IT postings, PSU non-technical/IT cadre, State PSC | Few degree-specific exams exist; most BCA/BBA graduates compete in the general-graduate SSC/banking pool. |
| LLB (Law) | State Judicial Services exams, UPPSC PCS (Judicial), legal officer posts in PSUs/banks | A law degree is mandatory for judicial service exams and preferred for PSU/bank legal-officer roles. |
Every exam sets its own baseline for qualification, nationality and final-year candidates the three points that most often cause a rejected application.
| Exam | Minimum qualification | Nationality | Final-year candidates |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL | Bachelor’s degree, any discipline (Statistics for JSO posts) | Indian citizen, with limited Nepal/Bhutan/Tibetan-refugee provisions | Allowed; must produce proof of degree by the notified cutoff date |
| IBPS PO | Bachelor’s degree, any discipline | Indian citizen | Usually not allowed the degree must already be complete |
| UPSC CSE | Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university | Indian citizen for IAS/IPS; limited relaxation for other services | Allowed for Prelims; must prove completion before Mains |
| RRB NTPC (Graduate) | Bachelor’s degree | Indian citizen | Not eligible while awaiting a final result |
| UPSC CDS | Bachelor’s degree (engineering degree for INA; Physics & Maths for AFA) | Indian citizen, with Nepal/Bhutan/Tibetan-refugee provisions | Allowed; must complete the degree before joining |
| State PSC (PCS) | Bachelor’s degree (law degree for the judicial branch) | Indian citizen; some states apply domicile rules | Varies by state notification |
| CTET (Paper II) | Bachelor’s degree + B.Ed or equivalent NCTE-recognised qualification | Indian citizen, with Nepal/Bhutan/Tibetan-refugee provisions | Depends on the specific teaching post applied for later |
| PSU (via GATE) | Bachelor’s degree in engineering/technology | Indian citizen; some PSUs also accept OCI candidates | Final-year candidates can generally appear for GATE itself |
Age is the single most common reason for a rejected application. Compare the general-category band across exams first, then check your own category’s relaxation.
| Exam | Minimum age | Maximum age (General) | Reckoning date pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL | 18 | 27–32 (post-wise) | As notified, commonly 1 August of the exam year |
| IBPS PO | 20 | 30 | As notified in the detailed notification |
| UPSC CSE | 21 | 32 | 1 August of the exam year |
| RRB NTPC (Graduate) | 18 | 33–36 (cycle-dependent) | 1 January of the exam year |
| UPSC CDS | 19 | 24–25 (academy-wise) | Date of commencement of course |
| UPPSC PCS | 21 | 40 | As notified; varies by state PSC |
| CTET | 18 | No upper limit | Not applicable CTET is a qualifying test |
| Category | Typical relaxation |
|---|---|
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | +3 years |
| SC / ST | +5 years |
| PwBD | +10 to +15 years, depending on the exam and base category |
| Ex-servicemen | Exam-specific, often service rendered plus 3 years |
| Government employees (department exams) | Exam-specific; check the individual notification |
Category relaxations are exam-specific and often combine in ways the general table above can’t capture always read the exact relaxation clause in that year’s official notification rather than adding percentages on your own.
Almost every graduate-level exam follows one of five patterns. Learn the pattern once, and you’ll recognise it in any new notification.
Examples: SSC CGL, SSC CHSL
Tier 1 (screening) → Tier 2 (main, includes a skill or typing test for some posts) → Document verification. Most posts have carried no separate interview since the 2016 reforms.
Examples: IBPS PO/SBI PO, UPSC CSE, State PSC
Prelims is qualifying only; Mains (often descriptive) decides your merit rank; a final interview or personality test follows before document verification.
Examples: PSU recruitment via GATE
Your GATE score is used directly for shortlisting against a published cutoff, followed by a group discussion or interview (varies by PSU) and a medical check.
Examples: UPSC CDS, defence officer entries
A written exam is followed by a five-day SSB interview (intelligence and psychology tests, group tasks, personal interview) and a medical examination.
Examples: CTET/TET, then KVS/NVS/DSSSB or state teacher boards
Clearing CTET or a state TET only makes you eligible to apply; you still sit a separate recruitment exam or interview for the actual teaching post.
Government salaries follow the 7th Central Pay Commission’s pay matrix (states broadly mirror this with local variation). In-hand pay is basic pay plus Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Transport Allowance so your actual pay slip is usually well above the “basic pay” figure quoted in a notification.
| Category | Pay level | Approx. basic pay | Approx. in-hand pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL entry posts (Tax Assistant/Auditor) | Level 4 | ₹25,500 | ₹42,000–48,000 |
| SSC CGL (Inspector/Assistant Section Officer) | Level 7 | ₹44,900 | ₹70,000–80,000 |
| IBPS PO (Probationary Officer) | Scale I | ~₹48,480 (basic + DA structure) | ₹74,000–76,000 |
| RRB NTPC graduate post (e.g. Station Master) | Level 6 | ₹35,400 | ₹55,000+ |
| UPSC CSE (IAS/IPS, entry) | Level 10 | ₹56,100 | ₹90,000+ |
| UPSC CDS (commissioned officer) | Level 10 + Military Service Pay | ₹56,100 + MSP | ₹95,000+ |
| PSU Executive Trainee (via GATE, Maharatna) | Company pay scale | Varies by company | ₹1,00,000+ CTC at many Maharatnas |
| State PSC Deputy Collector (e.g. UPPSC PCS) | State Group A/B | Varies by post/state | ₹70,000–90,000+ |
Always check the specific post’s pay level and your city’s HRA class for an exact number the recruiter’s own salary annexure, once published, overrides any general figure here.
The exact portal changes from exam to exam, but the sequence rarely does.
Most bodies SSC’s OTR, UPSC’s single registration, IBPS/RRB profiles require a one-time registration with your personal and educational details before you can apply to any specific exam.
Confirm the post-wise eligibility, the exact age cutoff date, and the category relaxation that applies to you before you touch the application form.
Enter your education, category and post or zone preference carefully; save a draft copy where the portal allows it, since sessions can time out.
Follow the exact size and format specified usually JPEG within a defined KB range. A mismatched file is one of the most common reasons applications get rejected.
Most exams exempt SC/ST/PwBD/women candidates from the fee, depending on the notification. Pay online only, and save the transaction receipt.
Check every field once more before submitting most portals lock the form afterward, with only a short correction window available later.
Keep the registration slip safe. The admit card is released separately, closer to the exam date, from the same portal.
Applying to more than one exam this season? Keep your scanned documents, photo and signature in the required formats ready in one folder most rejections come from formatting, not eligibility. A polished profile also helps once you reach the interview stage; see our Resume Guide for how to present your academic and project record clearly.
Every exam family rewards a different kind of preparation. Match your approach to the exam pattern rather than reusing one generic study plan.
Quant, Reasoning, English and General Awareness dominate; the real differentiator is speed and accuracy under a strict per-section timer.
A long-cycle exam that rewards a static-plus-current-affairs base, answer-writing practice and a well-chosen optional subject.
Your GATE rank is the entire game core subject depth matters more than breadth.
Balances speed-based objective sections with a typing or aptitude skill test for specific posts.
Clearing the written paper is only half the process the SSB interview assesses personality over five days.
A qualifying test focused on child development and pedagogy as much as subject knowledge.
Map the overlapping General Studies, reasoning and quant syllabus across them first a UPSC Prelims and a State PSC’s own prelims share most of their static portion so one revision cycle serves multiple exams instead of starting over for each.
Fake recruitment notices circulate every season, often copying a real government logo and asking for a “registration” or “processing” fee. Commissions and the Press Information Bureau flag these routinely treat that as normal, not alarming.
For notifications this guide’s sources have already cross-checked against official releases, see the live listings on Government Jobs 2026.
Most graduates pick an exam by name recognition. A faster filter is to start from what you actually want out of the job.
UPSC CSE or your State PSC’s PCS exam both reward a strong General Studies foundation more than any specific degree.
SSC CGL or a banking PO/Clerk exam a shorter selection cycle and faster time-to-offer than UPSC.
GATE for PSU Executive Trainee roles, or RRB JE/SSC JE if you’d rather stay closer to field operations.
Defence officer entry via CDS, or SSC CPO if you’re aiming for a Sub-Inspector role instead.
Clear CTET or your state’s TET first, then apply to KVS/NVS/DSSSB or your state’s teacher recruitment board the qualifying test and the job are two separate steps.
SSC CGL and banking exams have the shortest prep-to-result cycle, keeping more options open while you explore UPSC or State PSC in parallel.
Plan your attempts, don’t just count them. General/EWS candidates get 6 UPSC attempts up to age 32 decide which years you’ll actually sit the exam properly rather than treating every eligible year as a free try. A rushed, under-prepared attempt still counts against your total.
Most graduate-level exams set the general-category band between 18–20 and 30–32 years, though it varies by post and body SSC CGL (18–32, post-wise), IBPS PO (20–30), UPSC CSE (21–32) and State PSC exams (commonly 21–40) each set their own limit, so always check that year’s notification.
Yes, for most major exams SSC CGL, UPSC CSE Prelims, UPSC CDS and banking exams final-year students can apply, but you must produce your degree certificate or provisional pass certificate by the cutoff date in that year’s notification. A few exams, like RRB NTPC, don’t allow candidates who are still awaiting a final result.
SSC CGL, banking PO/Clerk exams, UPSC Civil Services and most State PSC exams accept a degree in any discipline, making them the widest-open options for a general graduate.
A small number of PSU and apprenticeship-style postings recruit through a GATE score or a direct interview rather than a separate written test, but the large majority of graduate-level government jobs still involve at least one objective exam.
SSC CGL has no attempt limit as long as you meet the age criteria. UPSC Civil Services allows 6 attempts for General/EWS candidates, 9 for OBC, and unlimited attempts within the age limit for SC/ST candidates.
In-hand pay usually starts in the ₹25,000–50,000 range for junior graduate-level posts (SSC CGL entry grades, RRB NTPC) and moves toward ₹70,000–95,000+ for officer-level entries such as IBPS PO, UPSC Civil Services and PSU Executive Trainees, once Dearness Allowance and House Rent Allowance are added to the basic pay.
Verify it only on the recruiting body’s official .gov.in/.nic.in domain or verified account, never pay a fee beyond the published application fee, and cross-check the notification number against the recruiter’s own press release or annual exam calendar.
